A prominent medical doctor who has written several books in his field and a well-known “radio” preacher were exchanging ideas about worship. The doctor confessed that he had received no formal religious training. He had always assumed, he said, that people who attend Church on Sunday do so because they want to receive some assurance about after-life, some hope about life-after-death. The clergyman immediately and strongly challenged that assumption. “Most people go to Church on Sunday not because they fear death, but because they are lonely and want to be with other people,” he said.
Do most people really come to worship either because they fear death or because they are lonely? Is that what worship is about? Before becoming too judgmental we must ask, “What are our reasons for coming to Church to worship? Why are we here? Why are you here?”
