St. Mark’s Cathedral, in Venice, stands in mosaic splendor paying silent tribute to the Byzantine and Lombard artists and others who created it. And yet, as you look at it, you become aware of the problem of trying, over the years, to fit their diverse works together into a unified whole. Although the cathedral gives the impression of an unfinished, rough, uneven, unpolished work, nevertheless it stands as a powerful symbol of the greatness of God. It stands also as a powerful symbol of God’s human creatures. Rough, uneven, unfinished and unpolished as it may be, mankind is, nevertheless, God’s masterwork.
