An aging bishop had grown tired of the numerous socials and receptions he was expected to attend. On one such occasion, he entered the reception room wearily and immediately slumped into the nearest easy chair. “A cup of tea, bishop?” the demure hostess asked. “No tea!” growled the bishop. “Coffee, bishop?” “No coffee!” Being an understanding woman, the hostess whispered in the bishop’s ear, “Scotch and water?” “Brightening up, the bishop replied, “No water!”
In today’s Gospel Lesson, John the Baptist brightens up when he sees Jesus coming toward him along the edge of the River Jordan. “Look there is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world,” he cries out (Jn. 1:29). John then offers Jesus, not tea or coffee or anything stronger, but only water, because John is at the river baptizing.
John (who then baptizes Jesus) describes the scene that followed:
I saw the Spirit coming down on Him from heaven like a dove and resting on Him…
