Fear,
A certain man had resisted driving a car until he retired at age 65. After obtaining his driver’s license, he ventured out onto a busy freeway for the first time. After he had driven a while, a highway patrolman ordered him to pull over to the shoulder. “This is an interstate highway,” said the trooper, “and you were going too slow, only 18 miles an hour.” The driver protested: “I was only obeying the law. The sign back there said 18.” The officer was incredulous. “Don’t joke with me,” he said, “you must know that sign means this is Highway 18.” Then he noticed that the woman sitting in the passenger’s seat appeared to be in mortal fear, shaking with fright. “What’s wrong,” he asked. “We just came off Highway 102,” she stammered.
That poor woman must have felt very much like Jesus’ disciples in today’s Gospel Lesson …
