In a poem by William Butler Yeats, based on an old Irish story, a man is running “full speed ahead”. He’s running so fast that he is little more than a blur. And as he runs, he tosses aside many of the material things that everyone else is eager to possess. He gets rid of everything that might keep him from reaching the goal he is furiously pursuing. When asked where he is going, the man replies, “I am running to Paradise.”
In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus is walking in the Temple area. the religious leaders “gather around Him,” John tells us. They’re out to bug Him again, cross-examine him about His identity. “Who are You and what are You really up to?” they ask, in effect. Jesus replies:
