From time-to-time God reveals himself in the lives of certain people in a very dramatic way — a way that often changes the course of history. The conversion of Paul on the road to Damascus is probably the classic example of this Divine phenomenon. Paul had been a “Pharisee of Pharisees,” trying harder, perhaps, than anyone else to earn God’s love and favors. To Paul, this included persecuting the Christians — having them arrested and imprisoned and even executed. Then some mysterious force began working within him. But Paul resisted … and resisted. He could not understand what was happening to him — and then, Wham! God revealed Himself to Paul in a blinding light that literally knocked him to the ground. Whereupon, Paul heard a voice saying, “Why do you persecute Me?” Paul replied, “Who are you, sir?” And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the One you are persecuting” (Acts 9:4,5).
