Jesus began the Sermon on the Mount by saying to His followers, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Men do not light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket. They set it on a stand where it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts and give praise to the heavenly Father” (Mt. 5:14).
Scripture scholars tell us that in this instruction Jesus was referring to a house, square in shape, and large enough to accommodate up to seven families. The number of lamps kept in the house usually equaled the number of families. Each lamp was placed on a lampstand which was fixed to a post.
