The free coverage lasted for a year and it paid a flat fifty dollars per accident. One day the newspaper carried a full page ad to stir up interest in the campaign.
The ad read, “Yesterday a new subscriber who had received one of our free insurance policies fell from a bus, broke his leg in two places, lost four teeth, dislocated his jaw, strained his back and sustained a head laceration that required eighteen stitches. For this he received an immediate payment of fifty dollars. Send in your subscription order today and tomorrow you may be the lucky one.”
