A middle-aged man was trying to impress a new woman friend with his life story …
He said, “I was raised by parents who wanted desperately for me to excel. And because of their ambition for me, I tried hard all my life to be number one in several areas. But I have made it to the top in none. And now I have arrived at middle-age and I am forced to admit that, in the overall scheme of things, I haven’t been much of a success.
“I studied five languages, but I only speak two of these fluently. Therefore, I have failed as a linguist.
“I took lessons on six musical instruments, but play only one of them well. Therefore, I have failed as a musician.
“Moreover, I’m just a fair to mediocre writer.”
