There are certain questions in life that are so important they cannot be answered for us.
A parent may guide us. A teacher may influence us. Friends may offer advice. Yet there comes a point when the answer must come from our own heart.
Who will I become?
What do I believe?
What am I willing to give my life to?
The most important of those questions is the one Jesus asks in today’s Gospel.
Matthew tells us that Jesus and His disciples had traveled north to the villages around Caesarea Philippi, a region known for its pagan temples and monuments to earthly rulers. It was an unlikely setting to discuss the kingdom of God. Surrounded by competing loyalties and competing gods, Jesus turned to His disciples and asked, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” (Mt. 16:13).
The disciples answered as anyone might after listening to the crowds.
Some believed Jesus was John the Baptist returned from the dead.
