Make It Stick

There are words that sound beautiful the moment we hear them. They land gently, even comfortingly, and for a time they seem to steady us. The Beatitudes are like that. They are among the most familiar words Jesus ever spoke, and among the most admired. Even people who rarely open a Bible often know their rhythm: blessed are the poor, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers.

But admiration is not the same as endurance. And at some point, the question becomes unavoidable—not whether these words sound beautiful, but whether the life Jesus describes will make it stick when life presses back.

In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus climbs a hillside, sits down, and begins to teach. Matthew is careful about the setting. This is not a casual conversation along the road. Jesus sits in the posture of a rabbi. The disciples gather close. Others listen from a distance. And then Jesus speaks—not to the powerful, not to the accomplished, but to people…
