A panel of fifth-graders participated in a roundtable radio discussion of what they had learned in a Course called “Inventors and Inventions” …

To conclude the program, the children were asked this question: “Would you rather live in the past, the present, or the future?”

The first child opted for the future. Why? “Well,” he said, “Nowadays, if you want to wash clothes, you push a button and the clothes get washed. But in the future, you’ll probably be able to push a button and, as the machine washes the clothes, it will play music and give a weather report too.”

But, after this visionary response, child after child chose the past. One child’s reasoning was typical. He said, “In the past, all the people had to worry about were dinosaurs and things like that. When the cavemen fought they only used clubs. Now we use bullets and bombs, and we have the big bomb to worry about. I’ll take the past.”
