There are moments in history—and in every life—when everything familiar gives way at once. What once seemed certain no longer is. What lies ahead is not yet clear. In those moments, people do not rush forward. They wait. They gather. They hold close to one another and listen for something reliable they can trust.

In today’s Gospel lesson, the disciples gather behind locked doors (Jn. 20:19), gripped by fear. Recent events have challenged their understanding and left them uncertain about what lies ahead.

Against this backdrop, the doors are closed. The room is quiet. They are together, but they are not moving.

It is the kind of moment that comes when something has ended, and nothing has yet begun. The past still sits in the middle of everything, while the future has not taken shape. As a result, people remain where they are; they do not yet know how to move forward.
