A few years ago, Kentucky State University President Raymond Burse voluntarily cut his salary by $90,000 so wages for the lowest-paid workers could be increased. Burse’s decision directly benefited 24 employees and was a personal choice to demonstrate his commitment to fairness in the workforce. The University’s board of regents fully supported his action, reflecting ongoing discussions about fair pay in higher education. Despite the impact on his income, Burse said he was not seeking recognition but simply doing what he felt was right. The youngest of twelve children, Burse is a Rhodes Scholar and has distinguished himself throughout a remarkable career. Today, he leads the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights and strongly advocates for fair wages and social justice. -1
