Are you the one who is to come, or have we got to wait for someone else?

Third Sunday of Advent, A

“Have you ever thought about how much of your life goes missing from your memories? Does it feel like life just rushes by, too fast for you to grasp?” These and other thought provoking questions are posed in the sales brochure for a new, high-tech device called the “Narrative Clip.” And unless you are one of those currently engaged in the emerging practice called “Life-Logging,” the Narrative Clip, scheduled for release in early 2014, is no doubt unfamiliar. But more about this in a moment.

Way back in 1958, Samuel Beckett (The author of “Waiting for Godot”) wrote a play called “Kapp’s Last Tape.” It’s an inspiring story of an aging man and his tape recorder. For his own amusement, at the beginning of every year, the man records his observations, highlights, major accomplishments, and other random memories of the preceding twelve months. The play takes place in the 69th year of the man’s life, and during that year, instead of dictating the events…
