In today’s Gospel lesson, Jesus speaks words we have heard many times: “You are the light of the world” (Mt. 5:14). He does not offer them as encouragement or aspiration. He states them as fact. And then, just as plainly, He names what follows: “your light must shine in the sight of others” (Mt. 5:16).
We are accustomed to hearing Jesus described as the light of the world. That claim rests comfortably within the boundaries our faith. But when the same description is applied to ordinary people—to those gathered on a hillside then, and to us now—it presses more deeply, because it carries responsibility. Light changes how we act, what we notice, and where we place our trust.
The question Jesus raises is not whether we will be seen, but what will be seen in us. What kind of presence will our lives create? And what happens to that light when the world resists it?
