We read in the Books of Acts that when the Apostle Philip went into the city of Samaria, all sorts of marvelous things began to happen. Evil spirits were cast out. Paralytics began to move freely. Cripples began to walk without limping. “There was much joy in that town,” Luke tells us (Acts 8:8). Another translation reads, “The rejoicing in that town rose to fever pitch.” That is one dimension of the Christian experience.

The Apostle Peter writes of another style, saying, “Should anyone ask you the reason for this hope of yours be ready to reply, but speak gently and respectfully” (1 Pt. 3:15). Quiet confidence is another dimension of the Christian experience.

The New Testament writers also emphasize the theme of obedience. For example, in the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “He who obeys the commandments he has from Me is the man who loves Me” (Jn. 14:21).
