Grandpa and his six-year-old grandson went fishing together. It was the boy’s first experience as a fisherman and, when he made his first casting attempt, his line became a tangled mess. So tangled in fact, that even grandpa had to struggle to straighten it out. When he finally handed the untangled line back to his grandson, the boy looked up to him in wonderment and asked, “Grandpa, how come you’re the smartest man in the world?” Knowing the boy’s intense dislike for a certain vegetable, Grandpa said, “When I was your age I ate a lot of spinach.” The little boy pondered this for a moment, then replied, “It ain’t worth it!”
We live in a time when the consumption of anti-depressant pills is soaring. In this “Age of Despair,” as it has been called, there are those among us who are plagued with feelings of hopelessness. They look at life and they feel like saying, “It ain’t worth it!”
