Historians tell us that when the Roman Emperor, Severus, neared the end of his life, he gave a kind of farewell speech to his counselors. In summing up his life of fame and fortune and power, Severus startled his closest advisors with these words: “I have been everything, and everything is nothing.” Then, holding up the little vase, which would soon contain his ashes, Severus exclaimed, “Little urn, in a short time you will enclose someone for whom the world was too little.”
If our quest for wholeness of life is not God-centered, we are bound to discover, as the Emperor Severus discovered, that indeed, the world is too little. “What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life?” Jesus says to His disciples” (Mt. 16:26).
