The story is told of an ongoing exchange between a famous statesman and his biographer. Sometime after the author submitted his first draft, the political leader asked, “Is this the best you can do?” The biographer replied, “Well sir, I thought so, but I’ll try again.” So back he went to craft his work returning in a few days with a revised version. The man called the author in the next day and said, “Are you sure this is the best you can do?” “Well, I really thought so, said the biographer, “but I’ll try one more time.” This very same exchange went on eight times, eight drafts; and each time the statesman asked, “Is this the best you can do?” Finally, the author submitted his ninth draft and was called into man’s office the next day.
