There is a World War II story about a small group of men, on special assignment, who were being flown to Europe on a troop carrier. In addition to the pilot and co-pilot, there was a renowned diplomat carrying a bulging briefcase; a general officer whose chest was covered with medals; and an army private first class carrying his back-pack. The plane developed engine trouble and the pilot announced that they wouldn’t make it. The plane was going to crash. “We’ll have to bail out,” he said. When he began to pass out the parachutes, it was discovered that there were only four: one short. Immediately, a discussion ensued as to who should be left behind. Said the pilot: “There is a shortage of pilots and I am badly needed. One of the parachutes should go to me.” Whereupon he adjusted the straps and jumped.
