Perhaps some of us are here today thinking of the Church as an “Inn” — a kind of spiritual resort where we have come to get away from it all and find rest and refreshment and comfort for body and soul. And we need not feel guilty about it if the Church fills that kind of need for us from time-to-time. But, if we want to be in harmony with what Jesus and the New Testament writers are telling us, most of the time we should be thinking of the Church not as an “Inn” but as an “Outpost.” Jesus is not calling us to register at an “Inn” in order to be served. Jesus is calling us to enlist in His service at an “Outpost” of God’s peace initiative in the world. “I solemnly assure you,” Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel Lesson, “the man who has faith in me will do the works I do, and greater far than these” (Jn. 14:12).
