A prominent surgeon was a member of operating teams in two Chicago-area hospitals: St. Francis Hospital and Christ Hospital. The doctor’s usual routine was to operate in the morning and, in the evening, take calls concerning his patients from resident doctors in both hospitals. On one occasion, the doctor was on the telephone talking to a resident at Christ Hospital when his wife answered a call coming in on the other line. “It’s St. Francis calling,” she whispered to her husband. He whispered back, “Tell St. Francis I’m talking to Christ.”1 In today’s Gospel Lesson, it’s St. Thomas talking to Christ.
