A woman answered her telephone. She hardly had time to say “Hello” when a man’s voice, dripping with repentance, began reciting a lengthy list of regrets: “Darling, I’m so sorry. I’ve been thinking things over and I’m willing to change. I will buy you a new car for a wedding present. I will buy the house you’ve always dreamed of and I will ask your mother to stay with us. I’m a changed man. Now will you marry me?” To which the woman eagerly replied, “Of course I will.” Then she said, “And who is this speaking?”
“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.” And who is this speaking? It is the Lord Jesus, Matthew tells us. It is the Savior’s voice, calling for change in the lives of women and men, not only in His time but also in our time.
