In the nineteen-thirties, a preacher well-known for his fire-and-brimstone, doom-and-gloom approach, was sermonizing on the “end of the world,” the day of “final judgment” …

“Thunder will boom,” he cried out in a loud voice.

“Floods will cover the earth,” he bellowed.

“Earthquakes will shake the earth,” he screamed.

Then, as loud as he could manage it, he roared, “Darkness will fall over the whole world and flames will shoot down from heaven.”

Hearing these dire predictions, a little girl in the congregation whispered into her mother’s ear, “Do you think they’ll let school out?”

Then there is the story of another preacher who was about ten minutes into his Sunday sermon when a voice from the very last pew called out. “Louder!
